Opening day

…and so begins the second maiden voyage of my very own website. This is version 2, for those of you who remember my AOL Hometown days in ’99. (Are there ever second maiden voyages?)

Anyway, another year has passed and I can honestly say that, although I have nothing material to show for my time in South Africa (namely a BA degree, a promise ring, or an STD (joke), I’d have to say that it was time well spent. In fact, it was the best time spent since I joined by beloved Corps. Even my time in Kuwait, when I bathed from a canteen cup for over two weeks and considered socks “clean” if they had been left in the sun for twelve hours and beat against something hard for a minute, runs a close second place to my first MSG tour. Good times, good times, good times. I owe each and every minute to someone, somewhere. It wasn’t a one man show. I’m good, but not that good.

But before I digress, I want to recognize the boys that made the real difference. (In no particular order, and I mean that) GySgt Ford, GySgt Euclide, SSgt Dinsmore, SSgt Bartlette, Sgt Tarleton, Sgt Nyang’ani, Sgt Bennett, Sgt Whitacre, Sgt Kujan, Sgt Cruz, Sgt Johnson, Sgt Taylor, Sgt Macha, Sgt Bertram, Sgt Hilton, Cpl Whitman, and Cpl Arnold. I had to limit this list to the watch standers in Pretoria so don’t get your liver shook if you don’t see your name on it. Check out the photos of the good times. Thanks again guys!!!!

But as my saga continues, I left Pretoria on 6 Mar and officially reported for duty less than twelve hours later. I’m going to use the term “officially” rather loosely because I haven’t singed a single thing stating what I do. Two days later the Detachment Commander left for Greece and two days after that the Assistant Detachment Commander (who I will refer to as the “A/” from now on) grabbed a flight to Switzerland. A unique situation thus presented itself: I was treading in unfamiliar waters with an embassy full of people staring blankly at the new guy, submersed in a language I barely new existed much less spoke. I asked Angela, our cook, for a ham and egg sandwich yesterday and she watered the spice rack. Portuguese for Dummies is on order, I assure you.

I’m still settling in, for what it’s worth. I wasn’t even able to move into my room until Tuesday, which left me just enough time to scatter a few suitcases worth of my stuff all over one place, then vainly try to scoop it all up and get it to the other room. On top of that, new air conditioning units are being installed and I grimace at the mere thought of all those power tools so close to my Creatures of Lore crystal figurine set. The entire house, both inside and out, will be painted soon. I may wait to post pics until after its done, not like you’d notice the big difference.

Well kids, its rack time, and if you ever said you knew me at all then you know how I need my sleep. This little site of mine will in no way replace my sporadic emails, I assure you. Its simply a way to mass communicate with a bit of FYI and visual aid. Enjoy… and good night!

…to be continued at equally sporadic intervals.

The author.Born in the year of the Dragon, the author grudgingly accepts the fact he has too many interests and not enough time. A cyclist as long as he can remember, an avid yet inconsistent writer since age eleven, and a U.S. Marine since age twenty-one, the author also adds peak bagging, diving, snowboarding, and computers to his list of interests. Incidentally, he is aware of his inability to make a living from any but the Corps. The author accepts this as fact and remains optimistic. Feel free to drop him a line.
